It was 1999 when my mother abruptly awakened me and stated, “get up you’re going to a lifeguard class”. Little did she know that day was the day she awoke a drive and passion that was unstoppable. Fast forward to today, over 25 years in the aquatics industry that same drive, and passion has only grown. I say unstoppable as it was no easy task to get to where I am today. So many close to me and distant, no matter how far I progressed, still asked me the same question… “Are you still a lifeguard”. The little knowledge or regard for aquatics as a career is prevalent. I was lucky though, I had an aquatics mentor as I grew my guard, teaching, and leadership skills. Though that didn’t last long. By time I was 21 I was on my own and never felt more like a lone wolf.
Before completing this article, I wanted to attend this opportunity known as International Aquatics Safety School. If you don’t know this is Ellis & Associates school for aquatic professionals. After the pandemic, many veteran leaders were leaving the industry left and right. Attending this school, I saw a lot of young faces, many new to the industry. So, whether you are new, a few years in or even a veteran, this article can help you. It’s a path I and many others have taken, and I hope this helps you get where you want to be in your aquatics career.
